How do you give shape to the unknown and the unspoken?
How do you lead the reader through an invisible moment? During this intensive workshop, we will examine the power of the "said" and the "unsaid", the direct and the indirect, in poetry and essay. We will examine the craft and techniques used in personal essay. We will then look at examples from poetry. We will end by merging the two into lyric essay. Our guides will be contemporary writers working through these black and white spaces. Come with a pen and notebook and be prepared to venture into the unmapped territory of the lyric. Jane Medved is the poetry editor of The Ilanot Review, an Israeli international journal of creative writing in English. Her full length poetry collection
Deep Calls To Deep won the Many Voices Project in Poetry (2016) and is forthcoming from New Rivers Press. Her chapbook, Olam,Shana,Nefesh, was released by Finishing Line Press in 2014. Recent work has appeared in Mudlark, Tinderbox Poetry Journal, Cimarron Review, Spoon River Poetry Review, Tupelo Quarterly and New American Writing. 
Joanna Chen is an essayist and literary translator. Born in the UK, she is a Bread Loaf and VCCA fellow whose writing has been published in Poet Lore, Guernica, Narratively, Wild Age Press, and Poetry International, among many others. Less Like A Dove, a collection of poetry in translation, was published in 2016 by Shearsman Books. She writes a column for The Los Angeles Review of Books and lives in the Ella Valley of Israel.
