Intensity

Seminar with award-winning author
& outstanding lecturer,
Ilana Blumberg
June 21, 09:30-15:00

Picture
How do we write about events that are startling in their intensity without writing in overblown, melodramatic or insufficiently powerful language?

How can we capture in words experiences that seem to elude our attempts to represent them?

Such experiences might be joyous, painful, enraging, beautiful, surreal.

In this workshop, we will approach such moments of intensity as particular writing challenges and look at literary models that grapple with these challenges in different ways.

Writing exercises will offer opportunities to consider how style and story (form and content) work together.

Readings may include excerpts from Wave, by Sonali Deraniyagala; The Little Virtues, by Natalia Ginzburg; At the Bottom of the River, Jamaica Kincaid; Mrs. Dalloway, by Virginia Woolf.
